In 1 Peter 3:15 it states, “But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect, But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
While this verse is about preparing to defend your Christian faith; however, more can be taken from it. Additionally, while the versus is talking about being prepared to give reasons for having the hope and faith you have in Jesus Christ, there is an underlying message that many Christians on today’s “social media’ world forget.
Specifically, Peter states to respond with gentleness and respect. He doesn’t say to get defensive, nor does he say to attach or ridicule others. Rather, he is saying to be respectful. He is saying to be gentle. The ability to lean on Christ and respond in a gentle, respectful manner is what sets a Christ-like person apart from many who simply call themselves Christian.
So the next time you are social media, and you want to “put someone in their place, remember to look into your heart and revere Christ as Lord and be prepared to remain gentile and respectful.
James 4:11 supports this concept as well when it states, “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.”
